Beautiful People Prom: An Under the Sea Celebration

Under the Sea prom décor created for Beautiful People Adaptive Sports.

Earlier this summer, I had the opportunity to create décor for the Beautiful People Adaptive Sports prom, an inclusive community celebration for children and young adults with disabilities.

The theme was Under the Sea, and this one came with an interesting design challenge: latex balloons could not be used because of allergy concerns among some of the guests.

I’m always up for a good challenge.

Designing an Under the Sea Celebration Without Latex

Instead of approaching the no-latex requirement as a limitation, I treated it as part of the design brief.

We worked with alternative balloon materials and textures to create an environment that still felt playful, colorful and immersive while respecting the needs of the people attending the event.

The room included metallic sea-life balloons, floating elements, sculptural details and a custom “Under the Sea” balloon message that helped establish the theme and carry it throughout the space.

The final design still had movement, dimension and personality — just created with an entirely different mix of materials.

The Limitation Didn’t Make the Design Feel Limited

That was probably my favorite part of this project.

The fact that traditional latex balloons were not an option did not mean the design had to feel smaller, flatter or less celebratory.

It simply required a different way of thinking.

And that is one of the things I enjoy most about event design.

Every event comes with its own set of considerations. Sometimes it is the venue. Sometimes it is weather. Sometimes it is the size of the space. Sometimes it is accessibility, allergies or another guest need that changes how the design has to be approached.

The job is not to force the same solution into every event.

The job is to understand what the event needs and figure out what can work beautifully within those parameters.

Creating an Underwater Feeling Throughout the Room

Another thing I loved about this design was that the theme did not depend on one enormous installation.

Instead, the décor moved throughout the room in smaller moments.

Sea creatures floated overhead. Metallic stars, shells and ocean-inspired details appeared along the walls. The “Under the Sea” message created a clear focal point, while sculptural balloon elements added dimension in other areas of the space.

That gave the room a sense of discovery without overwhelming it.

Sometimes the right décor in the right places creates more impact than simply adding more décor everywhere.

Why This Event Was Especially Meaningful

Beautiful People Adaptive Sports creates inclusive opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities, and I was really happy to be able to contribute to a celebration centered around joy, belonging and community.

There is something especially meaningful about creating a room that tells guests, before anything else happens, that this occasion matters.

For this prom, the goal was not simply to decorate a space.

It was to help make the room feel festive, thoughtful and worthy of the people being celebrated.

Can You Create Balloon Décor Without Latex?

Yes.

Some events require alternatives to traditional latex balloons because of allergies, sensitivities, venue requirements or other considerations.

Depending on the event and design, Madeline’s Room can explore non-latex balloon materials, foil elements and other decorative approaches to create a coordinated installation without relying on traditional latex balloons.

Because every event and design is different, any material restrictions or allergy concerns should be discussed during the planning process so the décor can be designed appropriately from the beginning.
